Dr Andrew Rawson
for Cabonne Council

Cabonne has a reputation as the primary food basket of NSW. We have a wonderful combination of good soils and good climate. I bring extensive scientific and Govt policy experience to ensure the best future for Cabonne; resilient farms, healthy environment and security for our communities.

I stand for

Honesty, integrity and transparency

I will uphold these values in all dealings, with all people. I will ensure that decisions are transparent, balanced, and made in the best interests of the people of Cabonne.

Healthy farms

I believe sustainable agriculture is not only possible, but essential in this region. We can build living and productive soils and thriving farms. As a soil scientist I have worked on improving soil carbon to ensure the resilience of our farms and the communities that rely on them.

Healthy landscapes

I am a strong advocate for the protection and effective management of our native reserves like Mt Canobolas State Conservation Area. These areas boost tourism to the region, and are critically important refuges for wildlife.

Water resources are finite and need to be sensibly managed. Greater water use efficiencies are needed to ensure future water security.

Healthy businesses

Jobs in this region are dependent on our landscape, farms, and environment being in a healthy state. Tourism, farming, and local supporting businesses provide the bulk of our jobs, so these sectors need ongoing support from all levels of Government.

Healthy people

We are an aging electorate, with increasing healthcare needs across Cabonne. There are exceptional people working in the local health sector and they need extra support and resources from the Government to do their jobs effectively.

Healthy Cabonne

I will ensure that Cabonne residents are heard, respected, and provided with the best possible local government, using the best information and collaboration. I will advocate strongly for this Shire in any dealings with other councils or State Government.

Why you should vote for me

I belong to

Cabonne

As the fourth generation of a central west farming family, I operate a small grazing property in Nashdale, producing beef cattle.

I’m an adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Environmental Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences at Charles Sturt University, Orange, teaching agricultural sustainability and climate change science.

I am the former Chair of the Upper Molong Ck Landcare Group, which has been highly successful in gaining funding via the Environmental Trust twice in recent years for its weed reduction and re-vegetation programs.

I am a Committee member of the Australian National Field Days, and as a member of the ANFD Education Committee, I support and develop innovations to improve agricultural productivity and resilience.

My Position on

Climate Change

As a researcher of climate change science for over 25 years, I know that climates are changing rapidly and will continue to do so in the decades ahead. It’s going to continue to affect all of us. We need experience and expertise to adapt.

All regions and all levels of Government need to be prepared for the changes to come – and council decisions must align with what’s needed. Cabonne is a cool climate location and will become increasingly attractive for tree-changers from Sydney as well as people from the north and west.
